Poonch District, positioned along the Actual Line of Control, is a significant border district of the Jammu and Kashmir State, bordered by Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the west. Notably, it holds a unique place on the global map for its trade activities across the Line of Control, with Chakka-Da-Bagh serving as a key crossing point. Separated from the Kashmir Valley by the towering Pir Panjal range, Poonch boasts several attractions, including the historical Mughal Road connecting it to the Kashmir Valley, which lies 133 km away from Shopian District.
Despite being a part of the Jammu Division, a significant portion of Poonch District remains under Pakistani control as part of Azad Kashmir territory. Before the establishment of the new District Court Complex in Poonch, the old complex was located near the Municipality Office in Poonch City, with limited historical records available regarding its inception. The new District Court Complex, situated approximately 200 meters from Poonch Fort in the main city, was inaugurated by Honorable Justice Mr. R.P. Sethi, a Judge of the J&K High Court, on 4 September 1993.
Poonch District is administratively divided into four Tehsils: Haveli, Mendhar, Surankote, and Mandi. The judicial infrastructure comprises five courts, with three located at Poonch Headquarters and one each at Mendhar and Surankote, ensuring accessibility to legal services across the district.
